Hospital admission can be a stressful time, and missing even one document can delay your treatment or turn a cashless admission into a reimbursement hassle. This checklist walks you through exactly what to carry and what steps to follow before you reach the hospital counter.

Before you leave home: Keep your digital health card (screenshot or printout), the doctor's referral letter, a government-issued ID proof, and copies of any previous prescriptions or discharge summaries related to your condition. If this is a planned admission, most network hospitals ask for pre-authorization at least 24-48 hours in advance — carrying proof of this approval speeds things up considerably.

At the hospital desk: Ask specifically for the "cashless admission" counter or the TPA (Third Party Administrator) desk rather than the general billing counter — this is where NEHS beneficiaries are processed separately. Keep a photocopy of your ID and health card handy, since originals are sometimes retained temporarily for verification.

Common reasons approvals get delayed: mismatched name spelling between your ID and health card, an expired referral letter, or missing diagnosis codes from the referring doctor. Double-checking these three things before you travel can save you a long wait at admission.

How this works: When you're being discharged, the treating doctor writes out a prescription for follow-up medication — this is typically handed to you along with your discharge summary. Take this prescription directly to the hospital's in-house or empanelled pharmacy counter rather than an outside chemist, since the free supply is only valid within the network.

What's usually covered: Standard post-operative or post-treatment medicines prescribed for your specific condition, up to a 10-day course. Items like general health supplements or medicines unrelated to the treated ailment are typically not included, so it's worth confirming with the pharmacy desk if you're unsure about a specific item on your prescription.

If medicines aren't available at the counter: some network hospitals allow reimbursement against a bill if the exact prescribed medicine is out of stock — ask the TPA desk about this before paying out of pocket, as policies can vary slightly between hospitals.

Always carry your Digital Health Card at the pharmacy counter — without it, the discount can't be applied and you may be asked to pay first and claim reimbursement later, which takes longer.
